Years of the Gregorian calendar, which is currently in use today in a lot of cultures, are counted from AD 1. Thus, the 1st century comprised the years AD 1 through AD 100. The second century began with AD 101 and continued through AD 200.
By extrapolation we find that the 20th century comprises the years AD 1901-2000. Therefore, the 21st century will begin with 1 January 2001 and continue through 31 December 2100.
If 1st January 2000 is the start of the 3rd millenium then by definition 1st January 1000 was the start of the 2nd millenium. What then was the first day of the first millenium AD? There is no year 'zero'.
You will never find a reference in any history text to an event having occured in the year zero. That the current scheme for counting years was not in use then is irrelevant. It is what we use today to peg when events occurred in history.
